How is "evitar" used?
My book says it means "to avoid" and is under a health habits section. How is this verb used and what words are usually used with it?

As any verb there is a lot of ways to use it, I guess they're very similar to the uses of the verb "to avoid", anyway I'll write some of them.
Yo evito ir a la tienda sin suéter. I avoid going to the store without a sweater.
Siempre trato de evitar manejar en el carril de alta velocidad. I always try to avoid driving in the fast lane.
En mi vida he evitado las malas influencias. In my life I have avoided the bad influences.
Ellos siempre evitan encontrarse con nosotros. They always avoid meeting us.

Here in West Texas, a lot of Mexican TV bleeds over and I see a lot of "Evite el exceso" with regards to all sorts of things: eating, drinking, etc. I usually don't pay attention to what they are targeting, but I distinctly recall the caption on certain channels....
