I asked my Mexican friend the same question and she told me that in Latin American they say nerdo/a but I don't really trust the Spanish heritage speakers that have grown up in the US. I love my friends but sadly their Spanish is worse than mine. Anyway nerdo/a is what a lot of people use in LA.
