"Am" vs "Estados Unidos"

When I am looking up words in the dictionary, I sometimes see "Am" in parentheses, and sometimes see "Estados Unidos". What is the difference in meaning between these two?

Thank you!

Estados Unidos means United States. "Am" is an abbreivation for América, a Spanish word which translates best into English as "the Americas", including North, Central, and South America. "Am" in the dictionary shows how a spanish word is used in the New World as opposed to Spain.

América is different from South America which can be written as América del sur, Sudamérica o Suramérica which comprises about 14 separate states all of which are governed autonomously - - FELIZ77, Feb 22, 2011
