Gender of definite article when using mejor (best)

Gender of definite article when using mejor (best)

When using el/la/los/las mejor/mejores to say best, which noun determines the gender if you are saying that something feminine is the best part of a masculine group? Do you use el or la?

For example:

  • That woman is the best singer in the church?

Woman is clearly feminine, while singer (cantante) is masculine. Which determines the gender of the definite article before mejor?

Interestingly enough, when I use the translation section of this website, the Google translation is:

  • Esa mujer es la mejor cantante en la iglesia.

So it seems to be focusing on the gender of mujer, by using "la mejor" while the other two translations are:

  • Esa mujer es el mejor cantante de la iglesia.

So they are focusing on the gender of cantate by using "el mejor"

Which is correct?

El cantante = male singer; la cantante = female singer. - Stadt, Feb 22, 2011

El cantante = male singer; la cantante = female singer.

Some of the translators are not smart enough to relate the word "cantante" to the word "mujer" found earlier in the sentence.

However to answer the question at a more basic level:

"La gimnasia es el mejor deporte"

"El coco es la mejor fruta"

Would be gramatically correct sentences I believe.

I am a beginner so please wait for confirmation.
