Upfront Policy Agreement To Help Us

Ok, so I pray Heidita reads this thread as well because I really think this is a good idea, and big thanks to Feliz77 for indirectly (and probably unknowingly) inspiring the idea. wink

Anyways, recently there was an incident in which a new member asked a question that violated some forum policy. I believe it was done in an innocent, not knowing better manner, but I believe we can take another step to help newbies know better. This is good... smile

I believe it would help the site Admin and us to keep out of character discussions from opening here if we had one of those little agreement pages/pop-ups you had to go through as a new member before accessing the forum. In this page would be a brief welcome and introduction to how we operate, then as well, a link to the Rules & Regulations area and other necessary/useful reference guides for getting started. After reading over this, we not only would project a more professional/serious/real-deal appearance, but as well, it would commit the new users to agreeing to abide by our rules and what not.

This would help us accomplish alot as far as helping take a load of the already busy moderators, and as well getting a commitment from our users that they will respect us and each other, and finally they would definently be aware of how we function and how we can benefit them. As well, the members here already should have to see it once as well just in case they missed something and to know what we're asking of our new members.

I'm not saying this is the answer to all of our problems, but I believe it can and would greatly improve the website. I always like to helpful and positive as possible, so please after reading ALL of this, let me know what you think. I will even more-so like to hear from Admin on this. grin

-DJ Huero ((( d(-_-)b )))

I agree it can't hurt, although a lot of people click on "I agree" buttons without reading what they are agreeing to, lol.

There currently is a blue box welcoming people to the forum, and it has a hyperlink to learn about reputation, and a hyperlink to read the rules. I honestly don't remember (as a newbie) seeing the rules posted anywhere, and now I'm suspecting that if I saw that blue box I probably clicked on the first hyperlink (reputation) and got sidetracked from there before ever getting to the second hyperlink (rules).

This goes back to the concept that when people are new to a site they are often either overwhelmed or hyperfocused and do not see all the content before taking action like posting a question.

Also some rules are not really posted and you learn them by making a mistake and being advised of the mistake. I unfortunately did this when I created a post telling people that I had made a new set of flashcards they might be interested in. I did not know you weren't supposed to publicize flashcard sets, but an administrator advised me of that and the reason why.

Really? Can't publicize flashcard sets? I didn't know that. - webdunce, Feb 22, 2011
lol, me either... good stuff. - DJ_Huero, Feb 22, 2011
Here is a good rule: Do not create a question with the word "Forum" or "Reference" in the title. If you want to know why not, look under the unanswered questions tab. - Stadt, Feb 22, 2011
