Don't ask questions you don't want the answer to... sorry.

Ok, i'm going to take a leap here and just say what's on my mind. I'm not really mad or striking out at anyone, only pointing out the obvious. Don't ask a question if you don't want the answer.

Yesterday someone asked a question about how to say gay. Well, yes this is a family-oriented forum, however the behavior gay and the words to describe it aren't great. Unfortunantly the problem is becoming more and more surfaced to where our kids are exposed to the questions and stuff. So are you going to try to hide them from it, or explain it yourself the right way before someone else does it the wrong way for you.

Most of the long-time members here know me and know I'm not a hateful or intentionally offensive person. I have better things to do than sit on a computer and throw verbal darts at people I can't see or meet like a wimpy child. But if a question is asked and it's not just complete ignorance/ someone making a joke, then it should be answered. This really bugged me and it's still early in the morning (here in Texas) for me so I don't have my thoughts all together. But I wanted to put this out there while it was on my mind and hopefully i'm not alone on it.

I greatly appreciate this forum and what it does, and the fact that it is FREE! I only come here to learn and share what i've learned with others, not offend and hinder anyone. My appologies to anyone who misunderstood me and flagged me. I'm open to hearing other responses. smile

Much love fam,

I have not read the original post so I have only this post to respond to, but my point of view is, that if a member is asking a genuine, serious and goodnatured question that is worded correctly and not offensive, they should get an answer. Whatever the subject, controversial as it may be.

I trust that the members who answer the question are kind, correct and mature in their response. Such a response may be that they prefer not to see such questions on this forum, because they consider them inappropriate. Other members might answer the posted question in an equally correct way. That way, controversial questions could be regarded as educational and even suitable for children to read. In today's society I can hardly believe that children have never come across these subjects before reading a post on SD.

Regardless of all of the above, I think it is impossible to accommodate the opinions and beliefs of all members. There are just too many and their backgrounds are too diverse.

Some older children have come across such issues and have even discussed them with their peer groups in School but the problem is that some overprotective parents would be offended if they thought we had subjected their child to facing an issue th - FELIZ77, Feb 22, 2011
that they were trying to shield their child/ren from - FELIZ77, Feb 22, 2011
I understand but fear of confrontation gives children the idea the issue shouldn't be talked about. If I had a child, I would rather have the opportunity to correct any false notions they might have so their understanding grows then know they struggle to - chicasabrosa, Feb 22, 2011
....understand something they are apparently not allowed to talke about and just wait and see whether or not that has negative consequences to their development - chicasabrosa, Feb 22, 2011
Yes I think I see where you are coming from honest discussion between parents and children is preferable :) - FELIZ77, Feb 22, 2011

I am a big advocate of knowing what someone is saying, not necessarily knowing a word(s) for the sake of using it. I had read one poster here who really became agitated and, frankly, quite self righteous about not using bad words.

I know a ton of bad words in English and do not use them as I consider use of foul language an indication of one's poor education level.

However, I do have several books I purchased in various locales, bookstores, Net, etc., and know alot of bad words in Spanish and also alot of colloquial Spanish that could get one into a boatload of trouble. The point is I know them. I know them so that I know what someone is saying to someone, etc.

On one occasion in this forum, I had my inability to write English attacked, my father's mental prowess attacked and no one thought two cents about that.

I usually answer/ask only very neutral questions.

What was done incorrectly here is that there comes a point where you have to think before you pose a question. Writing is a much different delivery system than speaking.

Agreed, keep in short, sweet, and direct. That's how I usually play it. =) - DJ_Huero, Feb 22, 2011

(I would add, “or post an answer”)

(sorry I do not know how to split the two quotes from 2 different answers)

The problem as I see it, was that a simple question asking what the proper term in Spanish for a generally accepted and socially appropriate term was answered with several terms that were not in the same vein. It would be similar to someone asking for the name of a certain ethnicity and receiving a list of ethnic slurs used for that ethnicity.

Note that I use “similar to” and not “the same as” to try to avoid getting into a controversy regarding lifestyle choice versus brain chemical differences (whether genetic or prenatal environmental).

There was also a judgemental comment regarding the association of the term with a certain disease.

I agee that there will always be differences here regarding politcal, religious, etc., viewpoints, but I think we can try to be respectful. I think if a question asks for those viewpoints, it is fair to address them. But I think if a poster is asking a simple vocabulary question, that type of answer should be avoided.

I also for the most part try to avoid controversial topics, as my primary goal is language learning. I do occaisonally stray from that, but try to keep it to threads that look like they were intended for that purpose. This being an example, and one I probably will regret, but...

rofl, I don't think so. It was someone newer to the forum proposing the question, and apparently someone didn't like my answer.... and then (according to Heidita) Julian said something completely inappropriate and the post got deleted... - DJ_Huero, Feb 22, 2011

I had read the original post and was not offended by the answers as I believe in good faith that the people responding were simply trying to answer the question as honestly as possible without any intention to cause offense to anyone. I certainly wasn't offended since there are far worse things discussed on television which is a visual media too and worse things portrayed in dramas before the watershed time by irreponsible T.V. companies.

I agree DJ that this subject/topic/theme is becoming more openly discussed is society than many people feel comfortable about, to the extent that the media in England often have an obsession for bringing it up and it is like, in many people's faces. This makes it difficult for those who have children

Since these kind of questions cannot be answered easily without the potential for either causing offence and/or being deleted perhaps it would be better if such questions were deleted by the admin team as soon as possible? I am not generally in favour of censorship but since this is a family and community site. Maybe people need to be asked not to pose such questions? I am not saying I am right about this I am simply expressing my personal view so please let no-one be offended.lol

What do people think?

Why delete? I think it is prefereble to explain well and with dignity. Deleting gives the idea that the subject is shameful and takes away the opportunity to learn something. Isn't it also educational to see that different people have different opinions? - chicasabrosa, Feb 22, 2011
Yes Chicas I agree that it would be a better option by far but how then should we deal with those people who get easily offended at sucg discussions? - FELIZ77, Feb 22, 2011
such discussions. We would also need a set of threads that would be inaccesible to people below a certain age perhaps 18 years of age/those considered minors or children under the law - FELIZ77, Feb 22, 2011

HI Dj, I undeleted the post to see the answer given by you, I don't know these expressions so I have no idea if they are offensive or not .

Even though one of the terms, on Urban dictionary says this:

Derogatory Mexican-Spanish term for....

I did know the answers given by Julian, they were offensive. At least in my country.

However, a sexually based question like this, we prefer this is not asked on this site, as to get a correct answer, or a colloquial answer, there is always the risk of swearing or somebody feeling offended.

Bottom line: We do not allow these kind of post, forum policy, so I deleted the post due to that fact.

And this is not open to discussion, forum policy is forum policy.

Will someone PLEASE think of the children! Sorry, I had to. - Vikingo, Feb 22, 2011
Heidita you know I respect forum policy, and honestly I didn't check the thread again after I posted so I don't know where it went. BUT, I didn't see any admin response, was that clarified so people know the real reason it was removed. - DJ_Huero, Feb 22, 2011
I'm all for protecting children, and I don't like the subject myself, but that particular subject is unfortunantly a larger part of our society than it should be. I AM NOT endorsing breaking policy nor discussing inappropriate subjects here. - DJ_Huero, Feb 22, 2011
I just wanted to offer an appoligy to anyone who might have to what I said the wrong way, and clarify what I did, because someone did flag me and that means they didn't appreciate my help. - DJ_Huero, Feb 22, 2011

hat if a member is asking a genuine, serious and goodnatured question that is worded correctly and not offensive, they should get an answer. Whatever the subject, controversial as it may be.

Well, as I said, this is not open to discussion, it is forum policy not to allow certain kind of posts and especially offensive answers. The thread opened by the new member did not meet forum policy and neither did the answers, especially not the answers!

Why delete? I think it is prefereble to explain well and with dignity. Deleting gives the idea that the subject is shameful and takes away the opportunity to learn something. Isn't it also educational to see that different people have different opinions?

Post or threads are deleted because they don't follow the rules of this forum, as simple as that, wink

Do not post offensive material (language, videos, usernames, pictures, etc.). Questions or Answers with offensive content (sexually implicit , violent, racist, aggressive threads) will directly be deleted as this is a "family-oriented" forum and should be appropriate for all age levels.

Really this is very simple.

Thanks for all comments and posts. DJ, your answer on that thread was not the way to go, as you might probably ignore actually, I could have said those words and have no idea ...as I did not even know them, maybe this was the case.

Anyway, there are several threads on this topic, should we change forum policy, should we open a part of the forum only for adults...well, this can't be done.

thanks everybody for your commentsgrin
