Verb of The Day: Conocer

(Please add other meanings of today’s verb. I know there are regional and cultural differences that make language so colorful and vast)

Verbs ending in cer or cir preceded by a vowel add z before c when followed by o or a.

Conocer

Conocer= (to show familiarity) with person, place, or thing.(to know)

In Spanish there are two ways to express to know

The other word is saber(Spanish differentiates between the two)

as saber is knowing facts and how to do things

Example: Yo sé la canción = "I know the song"(by heart)

"Yo conozco la canción" = (I'm familiar with it)

....So you would use saber if you know a math equation, how to fix a car, or

know all the about how the universe began.

...Then conocer..If you know someone, familiar with Madrid, or The United States.

Two interesting words related to conocer

el desconcimiento = ignorance

el conocimiento = knowledge

Conocer

Conozco conocemos conoces conocéis conoce conocen

(Yo) conozco, (tú )conoces, (él, ella, Ud.) conoce (nosotros)conocemos (vosotros) conocéis, (ellos, ellas, Uds.) conocen

As with stem-changing verbs, the reason for this change is how it sounds: Consider conocer. Without c>a change,it's yo form would be conoco(as opposed to the lovely conozco)

Yo conozco a Heidita.

In the past(preterite): Conocí a Heidita la semana pasada.

Please don't forget to add your own example in any tense
