Please forgive my forwardness webdunce, but let me try to put your very competent explanation a slightly different way.

The original sentence is expressing the continuity of the grandfather's behavior.

To loosely translate would be something like: "While he was watching me dress and wash, he never let up talking slowly".

Your new translation is very nice, zh, but doesn't express that constancy of his behavior (which happens to be a lovely, well written expression of his personality).

My grandparents had been working a short while in the garden. Afterwards they were cleaning themselves up at the fountain in the back yard. While my grandmother was preparing our simple breakfast, my grandfather came to my room to wake me. .....He was watching me dress and wash while still speaking slowly. He always had a story or a joke to tell.

Wow how creepy that is. Your grandfather? I'm sorry to hear about that difficult living situation. They showed us a video like that in school when I was in 4th grade. Difficult stuff to deal with. I guess grandparents can be harsh. That was maybe 20 years ago that I saw that, and I still remember it clearly. It was hilarious because well, you had to see it....

It's easy. Dejar de = to stop. Sin = without. Sin dejar de = without stopping.

that makes it more correct, but more importantly, is it logical? I am studying Spanish without stopping playing with my dog?

Surely there must be a simpler way to use "dejar" in a sentence if I am understanding your purpose?
