No me puedo presentar al trabajo el día de hoy porque el perro se comió dos llantas enteras del coche y ahora no me permite salir de la casa.

I can´t be present at work today because the dog ate two complete tires on the car and now he won´t allow me to leave the house.

he ate the tires

sorry, I couldn't resist.. lol.

no need for subjunctive q. - Deanski, Feb 18, 2011
I considered it, but it kept sounding like my mother was telling me to do something. - 0074b507, Feb 18, 2011
Subjunctive will be necessary only if it says "My mom tells me not to come to work..." - Deanski, Feb 18, 2011
I think I know what's confusing. Your mom says "You can't come to work" but you take it as "Don't come to work". Mothers really talk like that, but if you analyze what she said, *gramatically* it really isn't a command but a declaration. - Deanski, Feb 18, 2011
The dog ate your shoes o.O Those had to be some delicious shoes ;) lol. Good job qfreed . - HotChickCD, Feb 18, 2011

Lo siento, el señor Jefe, pero cuando caminé a trabajar, la puente derrumbó y unos animales me atacó!

I am sorry Mr. Boss, but when I walked to work, the bridge collapsed and some animals attacked me!

I've used this one a lot. You'd be surprised at how well it works. - webdunce, Feb 18, 2011
"el" puente & atacaron sound more correct...not sure about a "se" in front of "derrumbó"...;o) Anyone else? - cristalino, Feb 18, 2011
I agree w/ you cris, since derrumbar is transitive (it has to destroy something). Adding "se" willl make it intransitive, meaning, it collapsed/broke down. - Deanski, Feb 18, 2011
I am sorry Mr. Boss, but when I ''was walking'' to work, the bridge collapsed and ''then'' some animals attacked me! - HotChickCD, Feb 18, 2011
Thanks for the comment Webdunce! - bandit51jd, Feb 19, 2011

Please refer to my earlier post and comments. I really what to understand and make the corrections so please let me know if the following sentence is close to your suggestions.

I am sorry Mr. Boss, but when I ''was walking'' to work, the bridge collapsed and ''then'' some animals attacked me!

¡Lo siento, el señor Jefe, pero cuando iba caminando a trabajar, el puente derrumbó y entonces unos animales me atacaron!

Is "andar" better use of "to walk" than "caminar"?

"El puente" because it's masculine.

Is there a different word for "then" other than "entonces"?

Is it "se" or do I keep the "me"? (since it's plural animals attacking me)

I was walking - estaba caminando. Maybe instead of entonces you can use después'. I will ask Vicente to check it for you :) - HotChickCD, Feb 19, 2011
First of all, you have to leave out the article "El" in "el señor jefe". "Andar" is not better than "caminar". You're right, "el puente" is masculine. You can say "entonces" or "después, luego" ... anyway, you're using "then". - Vicente1, Feb 19, 2011
Finally, the right sentence is "Entonces unos animales ME atacaron". You can not say "Se atacaron" because it says that they attacked themselves(each other) . If you say "Me atacaron", you are saying they attacked YOU, because you're using "me". - Vicente1, Feb 19, 2011
i hope you can understand me jajajaj - Vicente1, Feb 19, 2011
