Hardly........ dificilmente VS apenas

Hardly........ dificilmente VS apenas

So I read a lot of fanfiction in Spanish. You can too: Just go to google and type in "site:fanfiction.net desde" where desde = x (or any Spanish word) and click a story. They are hilarious, But I often see a translation that is perfect except for the word hardly being translated as dificilmente when it clearly means apenas. I asked Maria about it and she says it a terribly hard word to learn, since it makes no sense. Hard + ly = dificilmente. It has no business meaning apenas. What do you think? Gracias.

It's one of those things that makes English hardly to learn. - webdunce, Feb 16, 2011

Prefiero darte ejemplos:

She hardly speaks English --- Casi no habla inglés / Apenas habla inglés.

I hardly ever see them --- Apenas los veo / Casi nunca los veo.

Conclusión:

Hardly --- Casi no/nunca or Apenas.

That would be more like the hardly in "He hit me too hardly." ;-) - webdunce, Feb 16, 2011
Wouldn't that be "He hit me too hard" instead? - gone, Feb 16, 2011
Yes: these are jokes marked by winking emoticons. - lorenzo9, Feb 16, 2011
