Flashcards - recall section is unfair.

Flashcards - recall section is unfair.

The recall section of the flashcards is sort of unfair because it seems like you need to be a really fast typist to be able to get a high score. The scoring should be gauged on the length of the word or sentence. It's so hard to get a full 10 points on some flashcard sets.

typist :-) - webdunce, Feb 15, 2011
Thanks - dewclaw, Feb 15, 2011
"gauged" too ;o)... but I am in total agreement with Dew, especially if you have to type tildes to get any credit. - cristalino, Feb 15, 2011
You are correct. Unless you are a professional typist and the words are short, you're sunk. - Echoline, Feb 15, 2011
If you go to the control panel and install the International keyboard then the tiles are a snap. The ñ slows me down quite a bit because I have to hiit both the ALT and the N. - Ron_Austin, Feb 15, 2011
Whoops, that is tilde not tiles. Doesn't seem to be a way to edit comments. - Ron_Austin, Feb 15, 2011
Yes Ron, you can delete a comment and then redo it. :) - Brynleigh, Feb 15, 2011

Or you can just not care that much about the score as long as you learn the words--that works for me and I'm a really slow typist.

I like the flashcard section on this site better than on my other premium website,

The other site has a matching game and two tests, but I find the vocabulary I learn here really sticks in my tiny brain because of the Recall section. I am a good typist and gave up along time ago trying to get 100%. At first, I was embarrassed that my fellow students were looking at my scores and thinking I wasn't really 'getting it', until it dawned on me that many other people were not getting perfect scores in Recall for the same reason.

If I try to squeeze out an extra point or two by fast typing I am happy: you go back to Recall several times and the next thing you know you have expanded your vocabulary. Personally, I am amazed when people plow through flashcards for points and don't do Listen and Recall.

This is a fabulous site for vocabulary. The student made cards are excellent too!

Here's a suggestion:

If you want to get away from the frustration of not typing fast enough to get a perfect score, go to the "Aprender inglés Sections 1 and 2 under Learn Spanish. There the answers have to all be typed in English -- no tildes or accents to slow you down.

Before anyone accuses me of cheating, I had finished all the Spanish lessons (twice) and wanted to hear how the wonderful Paralee gave lessons to Spanish speakers so I could hear more conversational Spanish spoken!

And it does give you a lift to be able to get 100 in recall!

Yo sé, Paco, pero hasta que hagan más clases de español "online", no tengo a ningún otro lugar aprender. ¿Sugerencias, por favor? - NancyGrace, Feb 16, 2011

I too am a terrible typist and I'm dissatisfied with my numerical scores even if I do get them all correct. Just like dewclaw says its a bit of self competitiveness. I do wish the dratted timer would be a little more forgiving.

The "recall" timer is ridiculous. It's set optimally for "gato", "perro", etc, but not much else. - pesta, Feb 15, 2011

Well, eventhough some people say that they don't really care about the points, I'm competative with myself and do care smile

I agree with you, DC--that competitive drive kicks in, and there's nothing you can do about it! - NancyGrace, Feb 15, 2011

Well I guess it is no secret that Recall is the hardest part of the flashcards, but also the true test of if you know the material or not. I don't think it would hurt if they gave us a little more time to do it. It just kills me when I need to type a word and the ñ won't come out and I discover that my keyboard is no longer set on International Keyboard. It does give me satisfaction though if my score is 100% even though I might make less than 120 points. I only have 4 more lessons and I will be done with Part 1. When I finish I am going to start over again at 1.1 with just the recall section and keep working until I get 100% on every one. Then I can go to Part 2.

Oh ya the ñ thing. haha - dewclaw, Feb 15, 2011
Good luck with that one...frankly, it turns into a typing test rather than a knowlege test. Under normal circumstances, it just can't be done. - Echoline, Feb 15, 2011
A complaint shared by everyone who has done the lessons. I don't even know why they are timed except that they wanted to call them "flash" cards. - 0074b507, Feb 15, 2011
I've tried out of curiosity some time ago. I am not a fast typist and I could never get a perfect score, although I don't have a single doubt about the answers. - 00e657d4, Feb 15, 2011

This was discussed before here.

Really, there's nothing you can do about it raspberry. Just compete against yourself and be happy with your own score without comparing yourself to the brilliant 500 million words a minute typists.

Besides, if you are super competitive, do the flashcard set over and over again so your recall of the translation is instantaneous and your fingers remember the words and you'll get a high score and learn the words, it's win-win! wink

Has anyone ever gotten the top score possible in Recall, and if so, can you tell me which lesson has the easiest Recall section that can be typed quickly. I would like to earn the badge for getting a perfect score on a lesson (just for fun), but the Recall section is holding me back.

I think Stadt and Swampy have achieved perfect scores on lessons - Ann-Frances, Feb 15, 2011
I pulled it off on 1.3- the only tilde was on "el té". It did take a few runs through to do it though. - Stadt, Feb 15, 2011
I only tried on the one to see if it could be done, otherwise it really does not further your learning, which is the whole point of all this. - Stadt, Feb 15, 2011
Clearly made an impression on me..... - Ann-Frances, Feb 15, 2011

It doesn't matter how many points you earn - what matters is that you are learning!

P.S. I am a lousy typist. I often don't even attempt the "recall" section, even if I am confident that I know the words.

I think you are making a big mistake by skipping the Recall section. I think it is the true test of your grasp of the language. Even if it takes an hour to do it, you can still feel good about the lesson if you achieve 100%. - Ron_Austin, Feb 15, 2011
I feel just fine typing what I know to be correct, and intentionally ignoring the tildes as long as I'm certain where they go. - pesta, Feb 15, 2011
I strongly agree with Ron that it is important to do the Recall section even if you are slow. Thinking you know exactly how to spell and punctuate a word, and actually doing it right are two different things. I've found that out many times. - happyquilter, Feb 15, 2011

The flashcards that go with the lessons are, at lease, accurate and consistent. There are some in later lessons that made me crazy because I didn't know what the picture represented. Some user made flashcards are very hard to get a good score on because of mistakes, inconsistencies, ect. and typing will be the least of your worries. I suggest you make your peace with the recall section now or you'll be pulling your hair out later.
