Can you identify the Preterit by the accent emphasis?

some of the preterit can be mistaken without accents. I understand this when it is written but I cant really tell the difference between Mandó and Mando when its being said.

They sound very different:
MANdo and manDO, with the stress on the capitalised syllable. One reason to always write the accents when needed.
Harder is for foreigners to get to grips with the different stresses for words like progress and protest, the stress being on the first syllable when a noun and second when a verb.
