Do any SD members have a spouse or friend who feels jealous of the time you spend on this website?

I've heard of "Football widows", "Computer game widows", and so on, so why not "SD widows"...?

Of course, SD is not my only source of learning, but when I'm on this site with all you great folks, she gets a bit jealous. I tried getting her involved, and she has enjoyed some of the threads, she has competing priorities.

Write your stories here.

Well you're not the onlyone having this problem Pesta! - 00b6f46c, Feb 14, 2011
That is so weird Pesta, I must never have looked at your profile, I always thought you were a girl, lol, so sorry about that ja ja, must have been the pretty bird avatar :) - Kiwi-Girl, Feb 14, 2011
Haha... Heidita made the same mistake. Sorry I'm a guy. Was I too polite? :) - pesta, Feb 14, 2011
By the way, that pretty bird avatar is the Male scarlet tanager. The female is quite drab. :) - pesta, Feb 14, 2011
The male bird is usually the colorful one. No? - Brynleigh, Feb 14, 2011
So unfair, lol ;P - Kiwi-Girl, Feb 14, 2011
Yes Bryn. You may remember that 200 years ago men's fashions were also flashy and flamboyant? - pesta, Feb 14, 2011
In the bird world, males have to impress females, and females have to hide with the chicks. For one notable exception, check out Eclectus parrots! :) - pesta, Feb 14, 2011
You didn't mention Widowers Pesta :) - ian-hill, Feb 14, 2011
I meant both. Is there a gender-neutral version? Widpersons? haha :) - pesta, Feb 14, 2011
Pesta, you have GOT to go to Costa Rica. The birding is fabulous!!! - Echoline, Feb 15, 2011
I know - we've been to Panama twice, also Belize and Ecuador! - pesta, Feb 15, 2011

My wife is verrrrrry understanding. She has her hobbies and I have mine but I do feel guilty most of the time. I spend way too much time on either the forum, the lessons, or Skype. In fact last Saturday while on the chat she brought me a plate full of heart shaped brownies.smile

I am very lucky to have a husband who is very tolerant of all of the time-consuming habits that I have acquired over the years....my horses, my dogs, my SpanishDict and, (God help me) my Farmville, which wasn't my idea but that of my sister-in-law and I went along because I wanted to get closer to her.

Do any of you want to be my Farmville neighbor??? grin

And the ONLY time he ever got testy with me was actually last night because I was absolutely exhausted and he wanted me too come to bed and I wanted to post the picture of the day and the word of the day. We compormised, and I posted the picture and didn't wait around for the word.

Luckily, he is also trying to learn Spanish, but not with the voracity that I am....

You are lucky. It's a balancing act, and I'm getting pretty good at it. :) - pesta, Feb 14, 2011
Echo, I gave up Farmville a long time ago. From there I went to Frontierville, had a brief affair with the Mafia and Cafe World, then Treasure Island, City of wonder and now I am on Cityville which has almost been replaced by SD - Ron_Austin, Feb 14, 2011
Luckily my wife's computer is about 8 feet away on the other side of the room and she plays the same games, except for SD. Yes I know SD is not a game, but it is addictive. - Ron_Austin, Feb 14, 2011
Fixed minor typo. - Gekkosan, Feb 14, 2011
Thank you, Gekko. Will you be my farmville neighbor? :-) - Echoline, Feb 14, 2011

My wife is constantly upset. She has quit calling the site by its name minus the "t" (she nicknamed the site "Javier" instead). She thinks I should pursue more useful endeavors, such as watching basketball games or American Idol with her (or when she is being more rational, do my chores). She also gets upset when I speak to her in Spanish, although she has learned "vino tinto" in sheer self-defence. (Once I asked her "quieres algo para beber?"- her answer, "no, I don't want a beer" fascinatingly enough because cerveza is one of the few words she does know). I do try to do my written workbooks sitting next to her. I do try to recognize that she lost her first husband to a (Spanish speaking) Cuban American- so she does have bit of bias from that as well.

Edited to add another story I forgot- I think I made the mistake of commenting on the number of Coach purses she has and said something to the effect of her having enough for a whole family- at which point she looked at me and said: "and you only need one language".

It's the flashcards, stadt....it's the flashcards - Echoline, Feb 14, 2011
My wife does study some Spanish and supports my studies, and I help her. My profile "About" will tell you the rest of the story. :) - pesta, Feb 14, 2011
Yes, you must limit your flashcard usage to only 9 hours per day. - swampy, Feb 14, 2011
Yes, she does get mad about it. But I am not a natural at language learning and repetition is the only thing that works for me. - Stadt, Feb 14, 2011

Didn't take me long to get it. I have my computer set up so when I click on SD it takes me to my profile page so I can see if I have any PM's and then I spend more time than I should under QUESTIONS instead of doing the lessons. I have also been to my first Skype chat, signed up for my second and invited some people at Rocket Spanish to come over here too.

Yeah, my girlfiend gives me flak when I have long sessions on here.

Interestingly (maybe), flak comes from the German word Fliegerabwehrkanone.

I Love My Computer Pictures, Images and Photos

Well. I suppose there might be reason to be a little bit jealous if someone was literally attached to their computer 24 - 7. Perhaps it might be considerate to limit computer time to the time when your spouse is otherwise occupied. love my pc Pictures, Images and Photos

Actually, that's what I believe I'm doing. Still, I now seem to have dozens of friends... and she has few. Oh well... - pesta, Feb 14, 2011
Great graphics, Bryn. Thanks. - pesta, Feb 14, 2011
De nada, Is she a member here too? I think she would love it here! :) - Brynleigh, Feb 14, 2011
She's a member, but avoids it - haha. Just a matter of priorities. - pesta, Feb 14, 2011
Maybe she should plan her "otherwise occupied" activities for when you are on SD. How about that? - ian-hill, Feb 14, 2011
Well, recently I heard someone say, "When my wife is happy, everyone is happy!" lol Food for thought? - Brynleigh, Feb 14, 2011
We've been planning okay... It's just that I still feel a certain "pressure" to stop.. haha, can't stop yet -- :) - pesta, Feb 14, 2011
