Another Spanish Movie Pick

Every now and then I post a Spanish language movie pick. Here is one I saw the other day. It is available to watch instantly on Netflix:

Ladron Que Roba A Ladron

First, the movie features South American Spanish. It is very, very funny (in an Ocean's 11 kind of way rather than silly slapstick way) and easy to follow. The dialogue is not complicated and great for even beginners. Subtitles are an option I believe.

Emilio, a Colombian con man, shows up in Los Angeles with a plan to rob Claudio Silvestrini, who's made a fortune using infomercials to peddle snake oil to Latin immigrants. Emilio and Claudio both studied their trade under an elder con man (who's name escapes me) and were once brothers in crime. It's personal to Emilio because under their mentor, Emilio and Claudio had made a pact that they would never prey upon immigrants, a pact Claudio had become very wealthy by breaking.

Because of his fear of bank failures in his native Argentina, Claudio keeps all of his money in a giant vault in his home. The team must gain entry to the well-guarded mansion, steal two keys to access a vault, and then get the money off the property.

Emilio's friend, Alejandro, who has been getting by in L.A. selling pirated DVDs from a street stand and has been romancing Claudio's nanny to gain access. He has assembled a team of amateurs for the job made up of a parking valet, his tomboy daughter, a nervous Cuban actor, a techie, and a muscle man. Emilio is not excited about using amateurs but Alejandro convinces him that as immigrants, they will go unnoticed, appearing nameless and faceless to the wealthy target and those around him.

The movie has some surprises and a very heartwarming ending. I hope you all like it.

You do have to have a Netflix account. I don't know how Netflix works outside the U.S. but it is also available for rent on itunes and amazon.
