In the United States a bachelor's degree is usually a 4 year degree in a university, following high school. A master's degree is considered a post graduate degree and takes normally two more years of college. (university) It can vary from 1 - 3 years depending on the scholastic field. A doctor's degree or PhD (doctor of philosophy) takes even more study after the master's degree - normally 1 - 3 more years.

Edited to add that by the time someone acheives their Phd, they have studied a field very intensely, have 8 or more years of college, have done research in their field, written and presented a thesis, and probably taught at the university under a full professor.

They are the degrees awarded for different levels of education.

Bachelors degree is a four year college degree. Masters is usually 2 more years. A doctorate is two years plus a research paper.
