Concordancia de género
Escribí este:
Se viaja por cuatro ambientes, lo primero es sólo una cueva, lo segundo es una selva, lo tercero es una cueva con hielo, y lo último es una ruina de piedra.
¿Es "lo primero", "lo segundo", etcétera, correcto? Pienso "lo" para concordar con los ambientes, pero ¿debe ser "la" para concordar con una cueva y una selva?

The concordance is between the noun ambiente and the article, so all of them have to be masculine. But be careful, you can't use "lo" here.
I think you want to use the definite article:"the". So, the first one would be "el primero" the second one would be "el segundo"...
Se viaja por cuatro ambientes:el primero es solo una cueva, el segundo es una selva, el tercero es una cueva con hielo y el último son unas ruinas de piedra.
There is a construct in Spanish called "lo neutro", wingessubmar, which I read about in my Gramática básica del estudiante de español.
On page 220 it explains:
Quando nos referimos al complemento de un verbo, tambien usamos lo mismo (que) para indicar "la misma cantidad" o "la /s misma/s cosa/s":
Examples:
- Mis dos hijos estudian lo mismo
- He dormido lo mismo que tú, doce horas
- Pidieron lo mismo que vosotros: una subida de sueldo.
Also you can use "lo" with adjectives as in these examples from the dictionary:
lo (con adjetivos)
El gusto por lo bello. a taste for beautiful things
No me gusta lo picante. I don't like spicy things
Subimos a lo más alto del edificio. we went right to the top of the building
Lo difícil fue convencerla. the difficult part was convincing her
Lo difícil es que ... the difficult thing is that ...
Yo defiendo lo mío. I defend what is mine
La física no es lo mío. physics isn't my thing
en vista de lo ocurrido in view of what has happened
sufre lo indecible she suffers terribly
lo insospechado del caso what was unsuspected about the matter

Also you can use it "con valor enfático"
No saben lo aburrido que es. They don't know how boring it is.
Me doy cuenta de lo amables que son. I realize how kind they are.
Sabes lo mucho que me gusta You know (just) how much I like it.
