Hm...

- Gekkosan, Feb 11, 2011

President Mubarak has left and now it will be time for a new government.

In the recent history of Egypt, there have been 4 presidents.

Mohamed Naguib Yousef Qotp Elkashlan was the 1st president

alt text

Gamal Abdel Nasser played the most important role in the Revolution of 1952 which overthrew King Farouk. He was extremely interested in Pan-Arabism. Lake Nasser was named in honor of his name.

alt text

Anwar El Sadat, the only one who has been assassinated. Gaining Sinai, peace with Israel may be the greatest he did.

alt text

Hosni Mubarak, whose term is the longest. Played an important role in Arab-Israel conflict, made Egypt become an important ally of the US in the Middle East (besides Israel, Saudi Arabia)

.

Nasser and El Sadat were also Presidents of the United Arab Republic (which was a combination of Egypt and Syria in time of Nasser, but only Egypt in time of El Sadat)

According to one interpretation that I found interesting, Egypt's being a second country of revolution in the middle east after Iran might be a political balance strategy covertly supported by the western powers.

But still I believe this has been a good change and I hope it will make my Egyptian sisters and brothers happy in the long term.

I think any and all Presidents (or any other form of political leader) that has been in power for more than 8 years should be driven from power.

I am not from the USA but their Founding fathers knew what they were doing with a limit of 8 years.

There are many examples of leaders in power for too long going "mad".

Hitler - Stalin - Ceaucescu - Mugabe - just to mention a few.

Those countries who do no comply should be refused access to the UN.

There was consideration of electing a president for life in the US. It was G. Washington who started the tradition of serving no more than 8 years. It didn't become law until FDR died during his third term. It was ratified in 1951. - Leatha, Feb 13, 2011
4th term - lorenzo9, Feb 13, 2011
My USA history is obviously not what it should be. But FDR was a "special" case - right? Had it happened before? - ian-hill, Feb 13, 2011

I truly hope this works out well for the people of Egypt, but world powers have a history of not allowing true democracy to occur.
