I've read this a number of times, but i'm sure by the context it isn't talking about wine. Can anyone enlighten me please?

Yes vino means wine but with a different context it means (he/she/you(usted form)) came:

Vamos a tomar vino. Let's drink wine.

Joe vino para tomar vino. Joe came to drink wine. smile

Yes, the word "vino" is also the preterite conjugation (third person singular) of the verb "venir".

You can see it here.
