I want to say, ''She has a pre-diabetic condition and must limit her intake of foods containing sugar, including fruit.'' Does this sentence get the idea across? How can I say it better?

Tiene una condición pre-diabetica y debe limitar su toma de los alimentos que contienen el azúcar, incluyendo las frutas.

Corrected a formatting problem caused by using double quote marks in the first couple of lines of a post. I replaced the double-quote marks with two apostrophes. - webdunce, Feb 7, 2011

I find your use of "toma" a bit odd. Our dictionary does, in fact, suggest some phrases that would support your use. I would have chosen "consumo" or "ingestión". The phrase "los alimentos que contiene el" strikes me as superfluous (and, if you really want to use the expression, it should be "contienen" [plural]). I would have chosen the simpler "consumo de azúcar".

Thanks for your suggestions. My concern is that most people think "sugar" only applies to obviously sweet foods such as cake & candy, when foods like ketchup may have more sugar than a cookie! - LaBurra, Feb 7, 2011
