to spread on to a plate

What does this mean? I understand "to spread butter/paste/jam on something edible" and I understand to spread something out/about/around on a plate" but I don't understand "to spread on a plate". Would you cover the plate with jam/butter/etc.? Would you then attempt to eat the plate with whatever was spread on it, or simply lick it clean.?

Dígale que lame el plato limpio! ;o) just kidding! - cristalino, Feb 7, 2011
Might not be talking about food or eaty plates, you can spread films of liquids on to plates. Agar plates, photographic plates, plates of metal for etching, and stuff así. - afowen, Feb 7, 2011

"Untado cuidadosamente" should do the trick.
