How do you ask if an animal is "male or female" in Spanish?

For instance, while visiting a zoo in Panama I attempted to ask a zoo employee if the monkey he was handling was male or female. All I could manage was "hombre o mujer?"

If you are talking about animals you say :Macho (male) and hembra (female).
