The Letter ü

The Letter ü

Hello,

I was wondering if the letter "ü" is used only in foreign words. Because I've just seen the word "avergüenzo" and I'm not sure if it's Spanish or not.

The u is not pronounced in the combinations gue and gui, where the g sounds like g in "get". If you want the letter u to be pronounced in those combinations, you have to put a diaeresis ( ¨ ) on top of the it. These words are Spanish and follow Spanish orthographic conventions.

so ü is not pronounced like it is in german or turkish, but is pronounced u, just like in english? - ekimgkc, Feb 7, 2011
ü is pronounced like u. The diaeresis only indicates that it is not silent, as would have been expected when used in gue and gui. - pesta, Feb 7, 2011

Have a look at the great amount of words with "ü", which is called "diéresis".

Hi there,

This is a Spanish word and it means "ashamed". You can double click on words on SD and the dictionary will tell you their meaning, provided that they are in fact Spanish or English words and they are spelled correctly.

Saludos, Chica
