I subscribe to Netflix. They have a lot of spanish language films, and you can watch most of them instantly. There is a fee to subscribe to Netflix. I think the plans start at about $5 per month, which isn't too much.

There is a web site called LoMas Tv, which has spanish language tv and music videos with subtitles. You can see a lot of it for free, with a subscription charge to see it all.

Netflix sounded great but I then found I couldn't subscribe in the UK :-( - Jespa, Feb 7, 2011

I would second the suggestion for Netflix, especially because so many films are now available for instant streaming online. (in the past Netflix was DVD-by-mail only.) They also have a huge selection of Spanish-language films.

The only time I tried to use a "free" (that is, illegal) site, it filled my computer with spy-ware, so I learned that lesson. I recommend against this option.

Can I find it on youtube? - claylavl, Feb 7, 2011
Hmmm.... possibly, but youtube stays pretty up to date on their copyright stuff, so it maybe be blocked off. - DJ_Huero, Feb 7, 2011
I would get Netflix, or try Redbox, only a buck for a day. =) - DJ_Huero, Feb 7, 2011
I have Netflix myself to mention... it's wonderful and considerably cheap. - DJ_Huero, Feb 7, 2011

I could give you endless lists, all I do is watch spanish flicks. I prefer thriller/crime/alfred hitchcock style twists in movies, a few of these have that, such as tesis and palabras encadenadas, and nueve reinas, all excellent films. Besides those three, here are some of my favorite ones I've re-watched in the past few months:

Princesas (2005)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0434292/

Genre: Sad, drama. Stars Candela Peña, one of my fav actresses

Palabras encadenadas (Chain Words / Killing Words) (2003)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0339489/

Genre: Thriller, crime

Nueve reinas (Nine Queens) (2000)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0247586/

Genre: Comedy, thriller

Así del Precipicio (2006)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0429609/

Genre: Sad, drama

Crimen Ferpecto (2004)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0395125/

Genre: Comedy - first half of film is hilarious, second half stinks.

Secuestro Express (2005)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371939/

Genre: Thriller, drama

Impulsos (2002)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0322731/

Genre: Thriller, crime

Los cronocrímenes (2007)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0480669/

Genre: Thriller, mystery

Tesis (1996)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117883/

Genre: Thriller, mystery

Los lunes al sol (2002)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0319769/

Genre: Sad, drama

Aventurera (1950)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0041141/

Genre: drama

Netflix should have most if not all of these... I am lucky enough to live in an area with a decent sized foreign film section, check your local mom and pop video stores, they might have one too.

Hi Everyone, I sent this information to Clay, but I thought I´d share these recommendations with the forum. (Some of these have been mentioned.)

Hi!

There are so many, it´s hard to know where to start. Well, many people like the films of Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar and you can see a long list in his wikipedia or IMDB articles His old films starred a VERY young Antonio Banderas and Penolpe Cruz has been in several of his movies. She was nominated for an Oscar for Volver. Almodóvar´s films are often strange or violent (especially the earlier ones) with crazy plot turns and almost always include a gay or transsexual character. Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios is a classic comedy that I recommend to everyone!

Mexican director Guillermo de Toro is also over good. I especially recommend El espinazo del diablo (2001), El labrerinto del fauno, and El orfanato (2007).

Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal has many good films. My favorites are Y tu mamá también and Diarios de Motocicleta.

Again, check wikipedia for the films of Spanish Actors Luis Tosar and Javier Bardem. Bardem is an Oscar winner and is nominated again this year for Biutiful., a great but terrible sad movie. They have both made some great films. With Luis Tosar I recommend

Celda 211, La noche del hermano, El lápiz del carpintero, Te doy mis ojos, La flaqueza del bolchevique, La vida que te espera, Los lunes al sol

Good luck and happy watching!

Here's a couple you might enjoy from Pedro Almodóvar;

Atame (Tie me up, tie me down) Volver (To return)

And here is an interesting link - http://spanish.about.com/od/spanishlanguagecinema/tp/popular_films.htm

Here is a list of the 12 films I have to watch for Spanish class this year. I watch them twice, once with English subtitles to know what is going on, then a second time without subtitles to immerse myself in the language more. I've watched about half so far and really enjoyed them all. They bring up interesting cultural and historical issues.

Voces Inocentes

Machuca

Quinceañera

El Abrazo Partido

Sleep Dealer

El Método

Cama Adentro

A Dios Memo

A Otro Lado

María, Llena de Gracia

El Laborinto del Fauno

Habana Blues
