What does "Van Uds. al mercado?" mean? Does it mean "Are they going to the market?" Van Uds. = they go, al mercado = market

I'm not sure how to interpret this :.

Almost.

ustedes=you (plural or you all)

ell@s=they

It is:

Are you [all] going to the market?

you as in you all? Are you all going to the market?

I'm assuming the response would have to be from their point of view. Would this work? :

Si, nosotros vamos al mercado.

And thanks, I hope my Spanish improves smile.

Yes bigbroski, the answer would be "Si, nosotros vamos al mercado." However the verb vamos can only mean we go, so you would not need to say nosotros, unless you were really emphasizing the "we" part.

I agree with the above poster (gfreed) and will add something. The verb "van" all by itself could me either "they go" or "you (plural) go." That might have been the cause of your confusion. In the example, however, the abbreviation Uds. (ustedes) means you (plural) like gfreed said, thereby eliminating the doubt about the subject of the sentence. Hope that helps!
