English expression: How long are we talking?

At work tonight, Maria was about to seat a guest but told him there would be a wait. She has only been speaking English for about 4 years. The man said "How long are we talking?" and she said, about 30 minutes. When he left, I asked her....... Maria, when you first started learning English, wouldn't you have thought he meant "How long have we been talking?" and not "How long do you mean?" and she said that she still gets things wrong all the time. (I guess she must hide it). It's interesting to see things from the other side around.

I enjoyed reading that. Glad to hear Maria's English has become idiomatic enough to handle all the slang that gets thrown at people everyday.
