Franco means frank.

I'm not familiar with that phrase but it looks like something like 'they told me straight', or more literally 'they gave it to me straight'.

De franco could of course be idiomatic, zona franca is a tax-free zone and so, as Cristalino says, it could be something to do with an exemption, such as having the day off.

I'd be surprised if googling the phrase didn't get you your answer.
