Is "escalón" masculine or feminine?

One of today's Word of the Day examples was "la tercera escalón". Should it not be "el tercer" instead of "la tercera"?

"La" is connected to the adjective "tercera" describing escalón.

It's certainly masculine, so it shouldn't be 'tercera'.
