Ok.... So I wondered if there is more than the direct translation of "light and shade", such as, "shade of light" or "light in shade". I'm an American poet, so I kind of wanted to check.

light, shadow, and shading in art

More context always helps.

I think it´s rather a kind of contrast, as when we say that someone has both virtues and faults, at the same time, as everyone has.

I think it´s more used in plural: luces y sombras:

Pablo Neruda tenía luces y sombras.

Although sombra means shaddow, or shade; maybe darkness and light would be more poetic in English...
