I am using this sentence in the summary of a short story:
El narrador tiene solo un lamento; es que el presidente no hubiera sabido que él fue el asesino.
Question: fue el asesino o era el asesino
Please help me decide which is the more correct.

El narrador sólo se arrepiente de una cosa: que el presidente no hubiera sabido que él era el asesino
Tener un lamento ---> To be heartbroken or homesick
Arrepentirse de algo ---> To regret something

Which is the more correct? What if I told you that both are correct? Anyway, I would use "era".
