How do I let (make) Flash Player access my mic?

How do I let (make) Flash Player access my mic?

Am suddenly unable to record my voice response - the last part of each exercise. Had no trouble for the first 24 lessons, but for some unknown reason, when I am ready to record, the msg that I "must allow flash player to access my mic." appears. I've tried all the suggestions provided without success. Contacted Adobe, registered and related the problem in the forum. Have had essentially the same responses provided right here. Nothing seems to fix. Sound is O.K. Does anyone know where I can find the fix w/o having to take my equipment to the shop?

Are you running safari or Firefox ? Because Safari does this to me also. - ray76, Jan 31, 2011

Unable to record, I decided to just go ahead with the lessons without doing that. This morning, doing #10 of part II, I find, again for no reason that I know of, that I have a different "record" screen than I had when I first asked the question. Now I have the "allow" and "deny" choice which I did not have before. Somebody must know something about what was going on and wouldn 't say - but has quietly "fixed" it - at least for the time being. Only other possibility is that there are truly unseen gremlins within these things.

I don't understand why you need to remove Windows Messenger to uninstall/reinstall Adobe Flash. I just tried it and it worked quickly. You must be running Messenger in the background. Have you tried shutting down messenger before you try to uninstall Adobe Flash?

If you can, shut down Windows Messenger and try to uninstall Adobe Flash again. It should only take a few seconds.

I hope I'm not leading you down a bad road, but that's all I can think of. It should only take a few minutes to uninstall/reinstall Flash.

You're right. Messenger is running in the background. Flash Player says I need to close it (shut it down). I don't know how to do that. So, looking for a way to delete it entirely and can't do that either. Worse than bedbugs. Need an exterminator. - Otravez, Feb 2, 2011

I also had this problem. The message would pop up and I would try to click ALLOW and nothing would happen. I was using Google Chrome. I downloaded IE 9 and now it allows me to record. (I still have the pop up and I still have to click ALLOW, but at least it works). I like Google Chrome but it gave me a problem with another app I was running,so adíos Chrome.

I've found this link which details information about "versions" of Messenger and how one can delete it or close it. Nothing simple for an incompetent (like me), but apparently some of you may be educated to the point where you understand what they are talking about and are confident you know what you have and what you are doing. My skills with this technology are similar to a driver who only knows how to operate a car with an auto transmission and couldn't begin to change a flat tire.

Kenful, I hope you are able to uninstall and reinstall successfully, It is the only easy remedy I can find. Please let us know how it works out, whether good or bad. My guess is that Flash could not find your microphone. I hope it will find it during the reinstall.

I did not realize, until your question, that Flash Player appears to provide a method for a web site to enter and change settings without the user knowing about the modification. It appears to depend on user defined security settings, but web sites can write themselves into an exception or special handled list for preferred web sites.

That's just what we need - another method to compromise a computer.

I hope this will help. If not, maybe another user can suggest something. I'm sorry you are having so much trouble.

I appreciate the efforts to help. Not fixed yet, but still working on it. Have not yet been able to close or uninstall Windows Messenger. - Otravez, Feb 2, 2011

Boy o Boy!! I'm in way over my head. I tried to uninstall Flash Player, as Dogwood suggested. No problem except I first had to close "Windows Messenger." I've never understood it and haven't before looked into any of the details. It is something else to get rid of. Google "uninstall windows messenger" if you aren't doing anything else.

Kenful, the link below goes to the global security settings instruction page. This page describes the security features and how to change the access on the microphone equipment.

link text

From what I see, you can modify access to multimedia facilities using the Adobe Flash player global settings manager. This should be set (at least) to "Always Ask". It appears you can change these settings for a specific website to provide more security.

I've been testing my computer using these changes.

edit begins here

I've been looking into this more and I'm surprised to see that websites can modify settings on the local computer and post changes for their specific sites. This (in my opinion) represents a significant security problem if the settings are not secure.

The cleanest method I can see that MIGHT correct the problem is a removal and reinstallation of Adobe Flash Player. A reinstall would change the settings to the default and could fix the problem. You can alter the switches, but there is a chance you could make your system insecure.

It also appears you need Adobe Shock Wave to store recorded information.

I believe I would try removing and reinstalling Flash Player.

Dogwood: Yes, I get the start screen, but upon beginning to record, the msg that I must allow Flash Player to access my mic appears. The "change" link also appears then, but nothing happens when I click on it. The only link that works is "How do I set up my microphone." I go to that site and follow all the instructions. Seems to work as would expect with the tests available there. But returning to Spanish Dict and attempting to do the speaking exercise - same results every time. As I mentioned earlier, this problem appeared suddenly as I was doing Lesson 10 in #2. The first 24 lessons were no problem whatever. To specifically answer other questions you asked. I'm running Windows XP, all updates are installed, Explorer (9, I think, can't seem to verify the version just now) and I have Adobe Flash Player 10.1, 102,64. Adobe tells me that is the latest and is appropriate for my equipment. Thanks for trying to help and sorry it's being stubborn.

Kenful, try this. Go to one of the lessons you have already successfully completed. Go the the "Speak" section of that completed lesson and click it again. Attempt to access the microphone to perform the lesson again and see if you get that link error. If you do, the problem is most likely in your PC. If you are able to complete the already completed lesson again, something else is wrong.

We'll watch the post and try to help. Let us know what happens.

edit starts here:

I am unable to replicate the situation you describe using Windows XP, Internet Explorer, and Adobe Flash Player 10.0 Active X.

The link below goes to the speak window of lesson 1.1.

Please go there and see what happens.

Do you display the start screen for the lesson? If so, about mid-page (under "How do I set up my microphone?" There is a line that has a "Change" button. Click the change button and make sure your microphone is selected. It sounds like your modem is selected. If the microphone is not selected, select it and try again.

If you still have the problem

What operating system are you using?

What browser do you use?

What version of Adobe Flash are you using?

Yeah, this seems to be new. I can´t allow Flash to get my mic either. Works everywhere else (like on LiveMocha, for example, I can record my voice with no problems, and it shows 'allow' and 'deny' popup window).

Just try to check your network connection. Sometimes I do not even get that recrord stop play buttons to proceed with speak sections.

After few tries and some time later I was able to connect to the server properly.

Are you sure that you microphone is working elsewhere correctly?

Are you using a microphone or a headset with a mike? I know I can plug my headset into the sound card (in/out/mike/spkr) in the back of my computer or into similar ports on the front of my computer. I have to change the computer configuration to tell it where my external computer speakers are plugged in and where my headset is plugged in so that it will know which is which. You might try and see if the problem is with your computer sound system configuration. Don't forget if you have a webcam it may have its own microphone which is conflicting with your headset or mike.

I suggest trying to use Windows Sound Recorder (simple program usually listed under Accessories in the Start menu of Windows). Make sure that you can record and playback a sound file. This will let you know if your mike is muted by default, whether you need to boost the signal, etc.

The program on SD accesses your computer's sound configuration. That is what you are Alowing or Denying. If your configuration has a problem, SD won't be able to find your hardware or their correct settings.

Yes, I've read it and done it several times. It seems to be working as expected until I try to use it in these lessons. - Otravez, Jan 30, 2011

Kenful, that happens to me on every lesson. Just press the "Allow" button when that message appears and it should record correctly. That works for me.

I believe this is because of a new version of Adobe, not anything on this website.

Hope that helps!

I just looked at this again. I am getting a message similar to what you describe, but I have an "Allow" and "Deny" button. Do you have these selections when the message appears?

Do you have the screen like qfreed has shown? - 0066c384, Jan 29, 2011
If you mean the screen shown in the frame below - no, my screen does not look like it. I don't have the "allow" and "deny buttons." - Otravez, Jan 29, 2011
Trying again just now. Very, very briefly saw a line which read: "Connecting to server." It disappeared and was replaced with the "change" link - which doesn't respond. - Otravez, Jan 29, 2011
