Los compañeros de cursos superiores pudieron comprender mucho más que nosotros.
Why it´s pudieron compender? Is it poner + comprender? Poner + infinitive?

The construction is the same as in English
They could/were able to understand
To be able to/poder is conjugated and followed by the infinitive of understand/comprender.

It's poder. They could understand much more than we could.
