La barra VS el bar ...... Daytime VS nighttime.
My friend says that during the day, the bar where you get stuff, water, etc.. oranges for your drinks, is "la barra" but that the place where the people are laughing, having fun etc... is "el bar" even though it is the same place. What do you think?

I think it's a very cultural/regional distinction,and as such it will be hard to achieve consensus on it.
For me: El bar tiene una barra...The bar/pub has a counter. En la barra se sirven desde desayunos suculentos hasta bebidas exóticas.
In Spain, people go to the bar (bar, no barra) to have breakfast (around 10 or 11 am, mind you) and ask for a beer along with their tortilla española.
Conclusión: Entre gustos y colores, no hay escrito los autores (To each his own)...
Same as in English, the same word for two different things.
El bar is the establishment - the bar. La barra is where drinks are prepared and served from - the bar.
El bar tiene una barra...The bar/pub has a counter.
La barra is more of a femine way to say it and El bar is more masculine. They both mean The Bar
