Fourth time to Mexico

Question

In May, my family and I will be going to Mexico on a short term mission to build roofs. This will be my fourth time. Since I have started building real friendships with some of the local people, it is interesting to see the difference in our conversations every year.

Year 1: I could't understand a bit of Spanish. Year 2: Could hear some individual words and prases. Spanish no longer sounded like gibberish (no offense intended), but real words. I could only ask "Como se llama? and "Como esta?" Year 3. I could understand much more. I was able do differentiate most words. I was able to speak some basic present tense sentences. This comming year: I have three months left. I hope to put much time into Spanish study and be able to truly communicate this time.

Mark, buenas suerte... I love going to Mexico. I learn something new everytime and the locales always seem to be excited to help you learn.

Hi Mark, welcome to Span¡shd!ct!

I'm fairly certain that they have a skype conference here every Saturday, although I'm not sure of the specific time. That might assist you with polishing your conversational Spanish.

I empathize with you on your feelings towards wanting to communicate with the locals. I would assess that I am about on your year two or three. haha I've been living in Venezuela close to four months now and I find it so frustrating that I cannot have a real conversation, yet. My girlfriend's mother and I play a sort of Charades and we can communicate quite well through our unique form of sign language. Deep conversations are out of the question, though!
