The difference between "novia" and "amiga."
I used the computer to tell my female landlord that I was going to visit my girlfriend and used the wrong word. The computer gave me novia. I am female. The landlord raised her eyebrow at the word "novia." Ignorantly I said yes, novia. I had never heard of using the word novia, but did not realize that it meant homosexual friend. So how can I correct this? When I used the computer to translate amiga, I also got girlfriend. Is the word amiga just as bad as novia?

Novia means girlfriend in the sense of a fiancee, or at least "significant other". Amiga means friend who is a girl.
novia=girl friend (romantic)
amiga = girl friend (platonic)
Amiga is simply a girl that is a friend. Novia is a girlfriend and can also mean fiance.
Novia: girlfriend/bride
Amiga: friend who is a girl
