I don't think that you are likely to learn all that much in such a short amount of time. However, it would probably be wise to learn at least some essential phrases to get by on when you initially arrive there. Pimsleur is fairly decent for this but the entire course takes about 90 days to finish, and although it probably won't have you conversational, it will probably have you to the point where you can acquire the basic necessities.

I suppose that aside from Pimsleur or other language on cd type programs, it would also probably be a good idea, at least in the beginning, to purchase and become very close with a decent Spanish phrasebook and Spanish-English dictionary. I imagine that from there, after having been dropped into the deep end and required to either sink or swim, you will probably be paddling along before you know it, just don't expect it to happen overnight.

Before I went to Spain, I tried to memorize some basic important sentences -- for instance, Where is a good restaurant? Where are the public restrooms?, etc. You will find that the problem is if you sound competent enough, they will answer you in Spanish, and you may not understand their reply! Best is to say "I only speak a little Spanish" (in Spanish) and if you go up to a younger person, they usually can speak English quite well. Europeans know our language much better than we know theirs! Libraries usually have language tapes for rent, also. And there is Spanish language television for you to start getting familiar with pronunciation. Best of luck to you!

I would reccommend you this book, but unfortunately it´s written in Spanish so it seems that only Spanish speakers learn foreign languages in one week.

Somadeb, Don´t you think if that were possible everybody would be a poliglot? You could learn 25 languages in one year!!!!

You are in deep trouble unless you meet one of these

Get a time machine. Other than that, I'd suggest extending your goal of two weeks to a much more reasonable amount of time. Good luck! smile

Studying 24 hours a day, you can do it in nearly 17 days provided that your memory maintains a steady performance.

Studying 24 hours a day, you will probably be dead in a week. - samdie, Jan 27, 2011
Which is not to say that I disagree with what Lazarus wrote. - samdie, Jan 27, 2011

The best thing to do would be to just go there and listen until you feel comfortable saying something. That will be in two or three years, but if you are going to be there a long time, it will be worth the wait.

Personally, I just wing it: I've been living in a place where almost no one knows English for almost a year now and I'm just a beginner at Spanish.

You say that you are a beginner at Spanish, but I wonder after nearly a year, do you feel like you can at least 'comprehend' much of what is spoken around you or do you still find yourself 'grasping?' - Izanoni1, Jan 27, 2011

I know it is very difficult. But the place I'm moving, nobody knows English or any other languages other than Spanish. So I have to learn a little-bit of Spanish language at least for conversation with the local people for my basic need and for giving preliminary instructions to the local employees.

Basically I need a crash course type of thing for a starter. And definitely I shall pick up the language in due course during my tenure of stay there.

If there is any solution, may please help me

There really isn't... Take Izanoni's advice... Pick up Pimsleur. And once you get there you will pick up the language very quickly, since you will have no other choice if you want to survive. - kerflop, Jan 27, 2011

I wonder if you know Spanish? Or you want to jump to that part?
