"en vela"

"en vela"

  • Ella es así....... es ella
  • Para ti la flor más bella
  • La que pasa noches en vela
  • Preocupada por ti

I assume "en vela" means, up all night, in vigilance? But we don't say in vigilance in English (or even vigilantly very much) so what would correspond?

And I have to ask this once again:

Velar VS desvelar, one is stay up all night watching guard, the other is mourn, or have a stay up mourning be sad session because someone died. Which is which again? Sorry my brain is so full of Spanish stuff that I can barely remember my own name sometimes much less the finer points of velar / desvelar etc.. Gracias.

From what I can tell, I'd say it means "sleepless" or "unable to sleep."

hello, here´s the previous thread on that

velar --> to mourn, to wake

desvelar ---> to stay awake

en vela means awake, as in desvelado.

They are related somehow related because people used candles (velas) while doing one thing (mourning) or the other (staying awake) during the night.

Anyway, you know some things on language do not respond to reasoning and have to be learnt by heart.

Finally, to bring deeper confusion upon you, Federico Garcia Lorca wrote these verses:

Dentro de la fragua lloran,

dando gritos, los gitanos.

El aire la vela, vela.

El aire la está velando.

The rest of the poem and translations are here

Me encanta el aire la vela, vela. The air watches over the candle. Very deep. Thanks! - gone, Jan 26, 2011
