In Mexico, it´s very common to use Descolgar (to pick up the phone) and Colgar (to hang up the phone).

In México if you say `` cogí el teléfono´´ two things will happen: people will fall on the floor laughing, or they will laugh in silence knowing that you are a foreigner articulating funny "erotic" phrases.

We use "contesté el teléfono y no había nadie", or "contesté el telefono y no era nadie".
