How can pierde be used?
"Un equipo ________ y otro equipo pierde." I know the team probably 'missed' something but what did the first team do??

Are you trying to say "One team won and the other lost"? Based on the tense of the verb "perder", it appears "One team wins and the other loses" seems closer, but it still doesn't sound right to me.

If you want to say "One team wins, the other loses", you need to select the tenses to agree. The verb "perder" is using the third person singular present tense, so you would use the third person singular present tense of the verb "ganar".
