Is there a translation for cook-off? I'm going to a chili cook-off, and wanted to tell my friends, but I'm not sure how to translate it. Competencia de cocina? No se oye bien...

What's a cook-off? - lagartijaverde, Jan 22, 2011
People compete for the best food cooked (informal) and they win a prize. Usually homemade food... - 00e46f15, Jan 22, 2011

CHILI COOK OFF Pictures, Images and Photos

Oh, if only I had the time, I would love to enter the chili cook-off! I have a really tasty chili con carne recipe. (at least that is what I have been told)

Good photo! I guess a picture IS worth a thousand words. I'd love to ask the question, "Chili with noodles, or without?" But I'm afraid I'd get slammed by the self-appointed "topic police" or "topicistas." - GaryT, Jan 23, 2011
The winner of the chili cook-off was a chili made with smoked brisket. It was delicious!!! - 00e46f15, Jan 23, 2011
Oh, that does sound very tasty! - Brynleigh, Jan 23, 2011

That's where people who specialize in a certain dish or entree compete before judges to see who makes the best dish. In the USA, chili cook offs and barbeque cook offs are very popular. - GaryT, Jan 22, 2011

Again the meaning, not the words must be translated "cook -off" can't be literally translated

"Voy a una competencia donde cocinaremos platillos basados en chile" .

Complicated!

Lets see what the advanced folks have to say.

The -off suffix can be added to pretty much anything to intimate a competition based on the preceding word. I recall a mate telling me that disputes within his rugby team would regularly be resolved by way of a c*ck-off, whereby the member with the biggest, ahem, member, would win the argument.

Creo que llegué a la conclusión de que se oye mejor si digo: "Voy a una competencia para ver quien hace el mejor chili". Las demás se oyen muy formales... Gracias de todos modos.
