Movie quote and question about object pronoun

Rompiste mi record! Y ahora yo te romperé a tí. Tal como lo hice con tu amigo!

Is it really necessary to write the object pronoun te here when you already emphasize the recipient of the action with a tí?

Yes. "Te" is necessary to express the reflexive verb form. "A ti" is not necessary because the verb conjugation takes care of that. However, "Y ahora yo te romperé" by itself sounds awkward. Perhaps it has more to do with the fact that this expression sounds very literal coming from "And now I'll break you".

Ye the 'y ahora' part sounded awkward to me as well. They were subtitles to a movie. I don't envy the guy who had to translate it as the line was uttered in broken English: 'You break my record. Now I break you. Like I break your friend' - S1r_Wakka, Jan 22, 2011

i think that's a dialogue in a film. It's a pun.

Yo te romperé. What are you going to break me? My shirt? Or maybe my eye?

Yo te romperé a ti. I'll break you. I'll give you a beating. wink

Yes, It is necessary. Do not say te romperé a ti. It sounds like you are going to hurt him. Say Te venceré.
