I wrote to a colleague, "I have been meaning to ask...", and was told he didn't understand that phrase in English. I have been wondering what a similar idiomatic Spanish phrase might be. I know there are a lot of ways get the point across...but I'm a little stumped on that specific verbiage.

Try translating "I've been intending to ask". It should be easier to translate into Spanish.
Or better yet, "I intended".
