Estar cantado - to be predictable and already mostly known. To be a sure thing. Is it often used? Gracias. El resultado de la carrera estaba cantada. Gracias.

I have heard it / read it, but it is not an expression that I ever use.

In Spain you'll hear it occasionally, and it will be perfectly understood. Although it is not a very common expression, most people should be familiar with it, and everyone will be surprised to hear a foreigner use it.
