Los perseguían.
Corrían detrás de ellos.
.. and many other options I am too lazy to think about right now.

Hi Jezzle: seems that "to chase after or run after someone is the question. I would suggest:
"(ellos) iban persiguiéndolos"

Were running = iban corriendo. So also could be: "(ellos) iban corriendo tras ellos." - pacofinkler, Jan 19, 2011

Just keep in mind that "Los perseguían" is "They were pursuing/chasing them."
and
"Corrían detrás de ellos" is "They were running behind them" and not necessarily in pursuit.

No, not in English. You would have to say "behind them" only. However, you could say "They started after them" (Beginning the chase) or (They started after the others started) - 005faa61, Jan 19, 2011
