If you change asistir a to the yo form do you remove the a?

No, the preposition is as necessary as "on" in "depend on". You don't say "I depend you", but "depend on you". However, the "yo" shouldn't be used unless you expect to make contrast like I vs HE in "I assist... while he doesn't".

No, you can say:

Yo asisto al colegio. (I atttend the school)

Yo asisto a la fiesta. (I go/I am going to the party)

If you mean attending a place.

If you are using expressions of time in your statement, you do not need a.

Yo asisto los lunes. (I attend/go on Mondays).
