Cultural Immersion Trip
This March I am going on a 10 day cultural immersion trip to the south of Spain. My current Spanish is good enough to hold up a conversation with a native speaker. For most of the trip I will be living with a family. For people who have been on a trip like this to a Spanish speaking country, I have a few questions.
How fast do you pick up the language while you are there?
Is ten fully immersed days enough time to get a pretty good knowledge of Spanish?
Are there any good tips for going on a trip like this? If you do have tips, they can be about anything. I'm just trying to get an idea of what this will be like.

If you speak latin american spanish it will take you a day or so to "tune your ear" to the speech pattern. There will also be differences in usage,but none so great that you will not understand. Take notes! and report back to us all!. A wonderful opportunity.

That sounds like a great trip! It took me a lot longer than 10 days to become comfortable when I moved to Venezuela after learning basically Mexican Spanish. Peninsular Spanish is quite a bit faster than typical Mexican Spanish, and has some differences in vocabulary, pronunciation and rhythm.as well. Still, you should be able to pick up most of it without any major difficulties. We definitely want a trip report when you're done!

I went to Costa Rica for two weeks last year. I did an immersion school and it was one of the best things I have ever done! My level was technically advanced when I went but I couldn't have a super fluid conversation or use the subjunctive much. When I left I felt like I had tied a lot of loose ends and had a lot more confidence. 10 days may not be enough to do a ton of work, but you'll notice a difference for sure, especially if you already have a base. Spain will be beautiful and I'm sure they know how to party! You'll probably meet people from all over the world too, that's the best part of these things. I made friends from Costa, obviously, other parts of the States, Holland, Germany, Australia....and probably more I forgot. You will have the time of your life! Also, host families are a great idea, be glad you're doing that. Not only is it cheaper, but you get to eat awesome home cooked food and practice! I am actually planning another trip to Costa Rica and for several reasons am not doing school, and I regret that I can't do a host family again =(. That was one of my favorite parts of the trip.
