both have the definition of "to miss". Can they be used interchangably

yo falto ( extraño) la clase

You use "extrañar" when you miss someone or something like: I miss my brother (because he's gone)
and "faltar" when you miss a class because you couldn't get there on time...

They mean different things.
Extraño a mi perro = I miss my dog (because I haven't seen him lately)
Me falta mi perro = I don't have my dog with me or my dog is missing.
There are other Spanish words that can also mean miss in some contexts, such as perder and fallar.
No. They do both mean "to miss" (among many other meanings & idiomatic expressions) but "to miss" may mean "to fail to do something," as well as "to have a longing for something/someone." This, I think, is where the confusion came from. Anyway, extrañar is the right verb to use when you miss/long for something/someone, & perder if you missed (did not arrive on time for) something (e.g. your class, the train, etc).
