No, it is not insulting, we use this all the time to describe our partner or even our father.

Yes it's the same in England we say the old man or the old lady when referring to our parents. - kenwilliams, Jan 16, 2011
That is strange , we have countless insulting words , but we do not use that phrase much at at all, I would never call someone an Old man or old woman" . Funny the differences we all have. - ray76, Jan 18, 2011
En Polonia, si, se usa "viejo(a)" para referirse a un amigo o una amiga :) - bomberapolaca, Jan 18, 2011

El viejo means the old man, I don't know whether it is insulting or not I suppose it would be if you was referring to someone who doesn't fit in to that age bracket.

Also, Bugs Bunny says "Qué de nuevo, viejo?" ~ "What's up, Doc?"

Well, if Bugs say it, then that seals the deal. - 0074b507, Jan 18, 2011

Welcome to the Forum al. Would it be insulting in English? You will know the context and before you follow Bombers funny instruction you better check 'viejo verde' in the Phrasebook! jeje

Viejo means an old man, "viejo" can be an adjective too. It would be insulting but after adding "verde" to it, it will be fine.
