Who would like to organize a Skype chat ?

Hello everybody addicted to our skype chatsgrin

I have been organizing skype chats for several months now, getting threats and all from my neighbours who think we are too noisy, jeje

Several Chats have been organized by Marianne, both for beginners and advanced students.

Sandy hosted a chat one day.

Our last chat was organized by Jenny and Marianne.

We are now a lot of people on the chat, I must have like 70 contacts and lots of you are often connected.

Who is willing to organize a chat from those who come on chat frequently?

Why don't you try, you give your time and topic and just do itwink

I will join in if the time is convenient and offer any kind of help you need.

So, how about it?

Yes, I like the idea of co-hosting with a Spanish native. I am tied up with helping my parents for a while, but perhaps I could arrange help on the day of the chat. Will some one be my co-host?

I am willing to "give it a go". Maybe a chat for super beginners like me.

Or perhaps a chat for the more timid shy members , also like me .

But, If there is no one more competent or willing to try , then I shall . sick

Nice Novio, let's see , you would have to open a thread with instructioins etc, you make your own rules of course;) - 00494d19, Jan 16, 2011
'instructions'. - johndoe04, Jan 16, 2011
Will talk tomorrow , I am bushed at the moment , so off to an early bed , first in ten days, I hope it is dry. - ray76, Jan 16, 2011
I thought you were a candidate :) - Fidalgo, Jan 16, 2011
If you're shy I'm a polar bear :P. - --Jen--, Jan 16, 2011
We could co-host Ray - You speak "Strine" and I will do my best either with a "plum in my mouth" or talking (toolkin') Cockney. :) - ian-hill, Jan 16, 2011

Just a suggestion, but it might be a good idea if chats of this nature were co-hosted by both a native Spanish speaker and native English speaker. This might help to take some of the pressure off of those who don't feel up to the task due to a lack of confidence (although not necessarily a lack in ability).

It would also allow the two co-hosts the opportunity to enrich their own abilities if the two co-hosts were to spend a bit of time prior to the chat on skype planning out and coordinating their intended activities.

Excellent idea, Heidi!

I'm a bit surprised that only Ray has answered this one. You are brave, Ray!

Obviously I cannot moderate a chat because my English is not good enough for doing it. But I'm interested in participating and I offer to help in anything I can when it comes to Spanish. Count on me, please!

I am often here between 6:30pm-9:00pm EST and see many chat groups {written only} come and go but no one "makes the call". We all want in ot it but are all, at the same time, afraid to hit that green call button. What lacks is the organization of a structured talk which is what Heidi, Marianne and Jen brought about making this whole SpanishDict Skype thing as popular as it is now. So, while I'm certainly not a Spanish native, I would be willing to work with one in that timeframe. I'm sure we can figure out some sort of gameplan. Anyone who sees my green Skype light on can contact me anytime. I must warn you though that I sometimes forget to shut it off so have some patience. I have never and will never ignore any messages.

I don't feel I'm yet competent enough to host a chat but I have often toyed with the idea of a chat-read, or perhaps read-chat. Something like a reading club.

Everyone would take turns at reading out aloud a minute or two of text from the same book. Perhaps from a book of poems. Perhaps a (very) short story. The problem is - all on the chat would have to have a copy of the book in their hot little hands. The group would have to be limited so all get a couple of "turns" at reading. The pages that are to be read aloud could be nominated ahead of the "chat". Simple questions about the text could be asked/answered by the moderator/or a native speaker.

Perhaps when I'm a bit more confident and the logistics can be worked out?

This sounds like a great idea. It would also be nice to hear what comments the moderator might have regarding each participant's pronunciation. - Izanoni1, Jan 16, 2011
Sounds like a good idea... - 001a2987, Jan 16, 2011
great idea annie, why not do it? - 00494d19, Jan 16, 2011
Annie - maybe the reading could be posted here first. Also it would be an idea to post it in both languages. - ian-hill, Jan 16, 2011
Thanks guys, seeing as the feedback is so positive I will definitely "investigate" further. - nonombre, Jan 16, 2011
I'm off to my daughter's place shortly but when I return I might open another thread, you know, asking for "reading" suggestions. I'm thinking something "light" and maybe something that is available on-line. - nonombre, Jan 16, 2011
Perhaps the Spanishdict reading group could meet once a fortnight covering a chapter. Okay guys - I'm onto it! - nonombre, Jan 16, 2011
Great Idea could we use electronic books something lareday on-line? Or maybe short extracts could be excluded from copyright ??? Maybe Marianne would know about that ???? - FELIZ77, Jan 16, 2011
I think this is true - If the original work is out of copyright - then any translation would also be out of copyright because the translation belongs to the original author. - ian-hill, Jan 16, 2011
@Ian...I can tell you for sure that that is the way that it works in the U.S. regarding copyright law, but as far as other countries are concerned, I have no idea. I am also vaguely aware of the fact that if a text is used for educational purposes then.. - Izanoni1, Jan 18, 2011
...copyright laws do not apply; however, I must admit, I am a bit sketchy on the details regarding this. - Izanoni1, Jan 18, 2011

Hi everybody, the idea is if you host a chat, you put up the rules, time etc.

There are lots of proficient speakers, I will write down those I know:

Sally, Feliz, Joe, Margerit, Marie claire, Samdie, Eddy

to mention only a few.

Anybody can host a chat, and anybody can co-host.

Actually, private groups are held all the time. Some people get together and talk.

So, if you can hold a chat, open a thread and tell us the rules. grin

I would like to give it a go but at a different time.

Would a native or fluent Spanish speaker like to co-host with me?

We could work out a "program" covering both English and Spanish.

WE talked with Hotchick yesterday and she is presenting a good idea for a chat, Ian said he would organize one, so was Feliz, sandy is actually organizing one already.

So, let us know the rules and the time etc.

I would suggest as co-hosters Margerit, Sally or Samdie, Joe. Very proficient speakers and probably with time on their hands.

In my opinion, cogumela is doing so much for the site, she cannot be the sole co-hoster of all chats now, that would be like her taking my or Marianne's place.

Even though she is willing, that is really not the way to go, I have found it abusive on me and Marianne and I do not want her leave this site too. She can be the co-host on one chat but not on all of them. In the end she would stay away for all the presssure on her shoulders.

I would be willing to co-host a Skype chat with someone else like Cogumela if she is willing. I could correct the English lol and she could correct the Spanish.smile

I am being serious here! It is much easier to do the job in pairs just like Marianne and Heidi worked well as a team smile Although my Spanish ia fairly good, when I am tired (Sypye chats are late for me lol) I cannot take in as much as usual or am more likely to make mistakes and I would not want to even unintentionally misdirect someone by giving them a partly correct answer or failing to correct their mistakes or by misunderstanding what had been spoken in Spanish by someone more advanced than myself.

Therefore I would be willing to correct the English or basic Spanish in a team with someone else who is much more advanced than I am in Spanish like Cogumela or Marianne. As I gain in confidenceat at some future time I may feel differently but that is all I can offer for now smile Take it or leave it lol

Great Idea! could we use electronic books something already on-line? Or maybe short extracts could be excluded from copyright ???

This site offers books that I know are outside of their copyright dates (at least in the U.S.) and are freely downloadable or can be viewed online in html format. Here is the link:

Yes, like Sally- I am amazed by Heidi's post but very happy and I will be glad to help anyone who wants/needs whatever I can do. I know some people are overworked and I will gladly help. I only need a teeny bit of notice because since it is early afternoon here when you guys are all ready for bed I sometimes am actually out and away from my computer. So please let me know, don't carry the burden alone! tongue laugh tongue laugh

Hi Heidi and all,

Golly! (just to be very English ;p) I feel a bit amazed to be described as proficient, I don't feel it!

Whoever's seen my post today in the Café will know that I'm rather more busy with various other things than I have been in the past, I'm a little concerned that if I offer help I won't be able to honour it. However, give me a little time and I'll have a clearer picture of what's going to happen and will be delighted to team up with someone to organise a session.

I'll keep up to date with the threads as best as I can, and let you know if I have an idea that seems do-able!

I think you are fluent enough, you live in Bolivia my friendwink

However, margeret or Sally for example, and how about Samdie? they are all fluent or very proficient speakers.
