Buenas tardes, ¿ Qué desean ustedes? ---- Les pregunta el dependiente.

Ustedes is indirect object or direct object here? Can I say Las pregunta ? Is it wrong if I use las instead of les??

It helps me to think about it like this: if you can fit another object in you sentence, then you probably have both a direct object and an indirect object.

I ask them [something] = Les pregunto [algo]

I tell you [my name] = Le digo [mi nombre]

I promised him [five dollars] = Le prometí [cinco dólares]

You ask something to somebody. (direct , indirect)

No, las is not acceptable.
