'Probablemente, Cricket fue creado en el siglo 16, en el sur de Inglaterra desde donde se extendió a las selvas de India'.

I mean to say:

'Cricket was probably created in the early 16th century, in the south of England from where it soon spread to the jungles of India'

Thank you for your help, not just for now...but for all the help you've given me so far in my Spanish learning experience.

When the comment was made that "desde" is the correct preposición in this context, I had some doubts. My first reaction was "it doesn't sound right" and I wanted to get to an understanding of the difference between "de" and "desde". I first found that "donde' is an adverb and could find no correct reason to use it in this sentence. After looking at both "de" and "desde", I agree that "desde" is the correct preposición. However, I don't think "donde" should be used. I would recast the sentence as follows: ........Inglaterra, desde la cual se extendió hasta las selvas de India. It may be that "desde donde" is acceptable in informal speech or writing, but I don't believe it would pass a grammar exam.

I would translate it as:

Cricket was probably created in the early 16th century, in the south of England from where it soon spread to the jungles of India

El cricket surgió probablemente a comienzos del siglo XVI en el sur de Inglaterra, y poco después se desarrolló en las selvas de la India.

El críquet

instead of "desde donde" I would use "de donde" for from where. (like in the customary question ¿De dónde eres? [from where...]

Probablemente el críquet se originó (fue establecido) en el siglo XVI, en el sur de Inglaterra de donde prontamente se extendió a las selvas de India.

those are different meanings of "from", in this case he is using "from" in the sense of "From here to there", and not in the sense of "where are you from", so that's why "desde donde" is correct. - Dakie, Jan 15, 2011
Thank you for the clear explanation. - 0074b507, Jan 15, 2011

In the jungles?! When in India, I only visited the more temperate/less vegetated areas but, based on that limited experience, I would think that there would be little need to construct cricket pitches in the jungle.

I was also wondering why the jungles of India was chosen. More figurative for underdeveloped? - 0074b507, Jan 15, 2011

I think your translation is reasonably, if not totally accurate. However, I don't see where you got the adjective "early" when dealing with the 16th century, or where the equivalent of "soon" was in the Spanish. And I think it should "de donde" not "desde donde." But, I'm just a student and not the professor.
